Abstract A summary of the resource. Az etikai kérdésfelvetés egyszerre régi és új jelensége az irodalomtudománynak. A műalkotások erkölcsi és morális megítélése a kezdetektől része az irodalomról való gondolkodásnak, az etikai érdeklődés azonban az 1980-as évektől kezdődően, a humanista előfeltevésekkel szembehelyezkedő és egymással is szembenálló irányzatok alapvető vonásává vált. Az 1960-as évek „nyelvi fordulata” után az amerikai irodalomtudomány radikális szemléletváltozásának egyik legjelentősebb eredményeképp az etika és az „etikai kritika” ismét az érdeklődés homlokterébe kerül. John Gardens regényíró és teoretikus, egyike az elsőknek, aki 1978-ban megjelent On Moral Fiction című munkájában szenvedélyesen áll ki az irodalom örökérvényűnek is vélt morális „funkciói” mellett. Ugyanebben a periódusban a szöveg befogadóra gyakorolt hatását, valamint az alkalmazás mozzanatát etikai szempontból is mérlegelő hermeneutikai szerzők (Paul Ricœur, Hans-Georg Gadamer) gyakoroltak számottevő hatást az európai humántudományokra. Az 1980-as években a dekonstrukció filozófiájában és irodalomelméleti irányzatában is egyfajta etikai „fordulat” figyelhető meg. Az új évezred első két évtizedében az etika és az irodalom viszonya további mélyreható átalakuláson ment keresztül. A poszthumanizmus diskurzusainak (pl. ökokritika), az ember és természet fogalmait újradefiniáló, a modernitás alapvető elveit felülvizsgáló törekvései szervesen kapcsolódnak az etika szempontjaihoz. Az érzelmekről és az empátiáról szóló viták nem távolodnak el az etikai megfontolásoktól (Alexandre Gefen, Emmanuel Bouju). A retorikai narratológia kiemelten foglalkozik a szerző, a szöveg és az olvasó közötti etikai kapcsolatokkal, a történetmesélés eticitásával (Hanna Meretoia), az „irodalom használatáról” szóló megfontolások pedig kifejezetten éles etikai kritériumokat vetnek fel az irodalom különböző alkalmazott területein (medical humanities, biblioterápia stb).
